Our Vision
To be a faith-filled community being changed and inspired by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, and who make a difference in the world, by growing more passionate as followers of Jesus Christ.
Our Mission
Being God’s people gathering together, growing in faith, and going into the world in Jesus’ name.
As a congregation we are growing in our commitment to reach out to our community and to the world around us through service projects and financial support.
Small group ministries for adults, as well as children and youth ministries are expanding to meet the needs of this mission.
Our Story
March 9, 1894 – Zion Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church was established with 49 confirmed members and 48 children. This first church was located at 2630 East 3rd Street in Superior.
For the next 33 years, all of the work of the congregation and its business meeting minutes was conducted and recorded in the Swedish language.
1915 – A building committee was organized and construction was underway in the church located at East 6th Street and 21st Avenue East. This new church building was rededicated on April 8, 1916. Electric lights and an electric motor for the organ were also installed around this time.
Late 1950’s – With the reception of over 100 new members, it became apparent that the existing church building could not meet the needs of the East End Lutheran Community. At the sixty-first annual meeting, a vote was taken and it was resolved that Zion would build a new church.
March 12, 1961 – Ground was broken at the present site. A plow, pulled by members of the congregation, scored the vertical arm of the cross into the winter earth and excavation began the following week. The plow, unfortunately, was buried in the excavation!
January 14, 1962 – A service took place in the church on East 6th Street and the congregation had a procession to the new church, walking down 21st Avenue East to the new Zion Lutheran Church. The Service of Dedication was then held.
Fall of 1999 – An addition to the church was added that made the church more accessible, including adding a new fellowship hall and bathrooms to the main level.
2019 - Zion Lutheran Church celebrated 125 years of faith and fellowship. Zion Lutheran Church remains active today with about 150+ members. Zion continues to serve its neighbors by offering a food shelf, serving a free community Christmas Day dinner, and hosting community activities such as Trunk or Treat and National Night Out.
What We Believe
Zion Lutheran Church is a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). We are a Christian community connected and living out our faith by loving God and loving our neighbor.
We are what God has made us – people whom God has created by grace to live in union with Jesus Christ and has prepared to live faithful, fruitful lives by the power of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 2:8-10). In Jesus Christ, God has reconciled us to God and to each other. As we gather around word and sacraments, this life in Christ is what defines, shapes and guides us as a community of faith, the church.
By God’s grace we can and do live confidently and generously in this community of faith and in service of others, amid the mysteries and paradoxes of this life in Christ – including our human limitations and failings, and the ambiguities, uncertainties and suffering that we experience.
We are a church that walks by faith, trusting God's promise in the gospel and knowing that we exist by and for the proclamation of this gospel word. We proclaim Jesus Christ crucified and raised from the dead for the life of the world. God’s word, specifically God’s promise in Jesus Christ, creates this liberated, confident and generous faith.
